Building a waterfall garden part 1

12/9/2007 12:39:21 PM Post Spacer

No stream would be complete without a waterfall. No waterfall would be complete without a stream and no landscape is complete with out both. For the do it yourselfers the most important thing to remember is that the water goes over the rock, not underneath it. This is easy to do by sealing the rock to the liner using (black) expanding foam sealant or motar. When you are building backyard waterfalls consider whether you want to have a fish pond or whether you would like it to be a pondless waterfalls with pondless streams. Every outdoor water feature will be unique to the landscaping. Disappearing waterfalls and disappearing streams will use a lot less space than a garden ponds waterfall.

First you need to think of how many waterfalls you want and pick out a piece of flagstone for each location. Don’t be a home depot pond builder and invest in plastic waterfall rocks. Before installing the liner, adjust the soil so that the rock will fit snug. After each waterfall location is prepared, remove the flagstones and put the liner down. Place a bead of expanding foam sealant on the liner then replace the rocks, packing additional dirt around them. The bead of expanding foam sealant should be 2" wide and 1" high.

It is not absolutely necessary to have a perfect seal, but most of the water should go over the falls. Some pond builders use concrete but it does not bond to the liner and takes 24 hours or more to dry. Using the expanding foam sealant, you can usually run water after 30 minutes. What is special about waterfall and streams is there is no need to rush, take your time to make a beautiful creation. The waterfall stones should be level from side to side to ensure that the water will flow across the entire face of the rock. A slight tilt forward will encourage the water to project further and form a sheet, but too much water will look unnatural. A tip of mine is to take a rock hammer and chip in groves about every inch or so along the edge of the waterfall rock. If the water flow needs to be changed after the installation is complete, move a few rocks to redirect the water. This change can be made permanent by turning the water off for a few days or until the rocks are dry, then foaming the dry rocks in place.

Building a waterfall garden part 2

12/9/2007 12:48:02 PM Post Spacer

To insure the stability of the flagstone forming the waterfall, large and very stable rocks should be used for support. Building from the bottom up, place rocks under the flagstone as though you were building a rock retaining wall. Carefully stand on the front of the flagstone to test its stability. Your water feature is not a toy, standing on it is not recommended.

Now that the waterfall is almost completed, you need to foam or mortar in a rock on each side of the flagstone to ensure that the water is directed down the middle of the waterfall instead of around the edges. Before you add all of the remaining stones to cover the liner, fill the pond with water and start the pump. As the pond starts to fill, look along both edges, the entire length of the stream, for any water flowing out. If the water is leaking out the side or is close to the top, add soil under the liner so the edge of the stream is 2" to 4" above the water flowing down the stream. Make sure each waterfall is full and meets your expectations. Don’t forget to buy your plants to enhance your new waterfall and stream. Landscaping will make or break your custom outdoor water  feature.

Building Backyard Waterfall in Cedar Park Texas

12/10/2007 8:03:04 PM Post Spacer

First thing at our consultation on outdoor water features we discussed what type of water features would look good with the landscape we were trying to achieve. The customer did not like the thought of a fish pond or a garden pond. The landscape was on a slight slope so we incorporated a dry creek bed to control water flow. The outdoor water feature we decided on was the pondless waterfall with the disappearing stream. Pondless waterfalls and pondless stream have no need for a garden pond because the water is stored under the ground in a pondless tank with grates. There are many ways to create this pondless waterfall and disappearing stream, but for the ground in Cedar Park, Texas everyone knows that 6 inches under the ground is solid rock. At the end of the disappearing stream we gave it the illusion that the disappearing stream would just over flow into the dry creek bed. We call this the waterfall that could but wouldn't. To the side of this disappearing waterfall and stream we installed a sitting area for him and her. We also landscaped and sodded the yard with St. Augustine grass as well as landscape around the outdoor water feature. The second phase of this landscaping project included the Oklahoma peach buff flagstone patio extension at the back of the house. Phase 3 of this landscaping project will include an outdoor kitchen

Waterfall and flagstone patio sitting areas

Pondless Waterfalls are More Than Just Backyard Waterfalls:

For everyone of you who looking for a outdoor water feature, waterfall or stream, Flagstone patio or custom landscaping, but aren’t sure about having a pond in your landscape, then there is what we call the pondless waterfall or the pondless stream or river. Building our custom outdoor water feature system includes the waterfall, stream, rocks and gravel, and aquatic plants – we don’t stop here, we can design a whole landscape project around the outdoor water feature. We believe that all landscape revolves around a outdoor water feature.

We also call it the disappearing pondless waterfall and stream because the water level never pools above the level of the rock and gravel fill, giving it the illusion that the water just disappears to no where, no its not magic. The disappearing water is captured underground in a basin, which houses the pump equipment, and is lined and filled with rock and gravel. The basin can be made many ways and depending on your landscape we’ll decide which type fit your outdoor waterfall. The water is circulated from beneath the rocks and gravel by the concealed submersible pump and travels through an underground pipe to the waterfall, down the stream and empties into the pondless waterfall basin.

The pondless waterfall is virtually maintenance-free. It may be set to run on a timer and have an auto-fill to replace evaporated water. There is no ecological need to run the pondless waterfalls energy-efficient waterscapes system continuously, versus a pond, which is a living, breathing ecosystem that needs constant oxygen ,just like humans.

 just like humans.

Outdoor water features are one of the nations top selling additions to landscape. We believe that a landscape need to start with a waterfall, add a fish pond if necessary. Many customers have concerns outdoor water features and garden ponds. That why we can now install pondless waterfalls, pondless streams or some may say disappearing river or stream or a disappearing waterfall. There are advantages to having a pondless water features. It is safer than a fish pond meaning no pool or pond, but with the pondless waterfalls and streams you should not have fish. The end of the river just disappears into the ground as in the example below. When we are building backyard waterfalls and pondless streams we still let the customer know that it is not a child’s toy. Outdoor water features are limited to the space we have to work with. More and more people are have pondless waterfalls and streams installed because of the rocky ground we live on. Most pondless water features are installed above ground with minimal digging required.

Outdoor Water Features in the Desert

11/18/2007 11:38:11 AM Post Spacer

outdoor water features Outdoor water features are the hallmark of the desert cities of Tucson, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, and while it is ironic that these water-starved cities should use water as a landscape feature so extensively, the outdoor water features do lend a striking beauty to the landscape, whether commercial or residential. Because it seldom freezes in these climates, the outdoor water features are enjoyed year-round without fear of an ice buildup and pumps burning out.

Outdoor water features in these climates bring a relaxing ambience to the setting, with their splashing sounds and sparkling water. These outdoor water features are especially nice in the summer when temperatures are over 100 and the sound of running water soothes the wilted spirit. Kids especially enjoy the outdoor water features that they can play in, whether it's a pool of water or a feature that lets them stand under water jets that spray upwards. Staying comfortable in the desert during the summer is a challenge, and the outdoor water features go a long way to creating an atmosphere of that is relaxing and cooling.

11/23/2007 12:45:09 PM Post Spacer

If you are looking for a serene little place to kick back and relax, why not think about building a backyard water feature? Your garden can be your very own oasis and you do not even have to leave home. Just think, you can step out your backdoor and listen to the sound of your very own waterfall. It has been proven that people find the sound of running water, such as a waterfall a bubbling brook or the ocean as very comforting and relaxing. When designing your back yard landscaping you may just want to include an outdoor water feature such as a Koi pond, a waterfall or even just something simple like a very small garden ponds waterfall feature. Now you won't even have to leave home to find that little oasis that you can escape to, just simply walk outside your backdoor and sit and relax while enjoying your very own garden ponds waterfall. There are kits that you can purchase that include everything you need to build your own outdoor water features or you can design a backyard space using a software package and incorporate your own designs. Start planning now and you will be ready to just get started in building your outdoor water features as soon as warmer weather arrives.

Pondless Waterfalls:akadisappearing waterfall The name explains it all. It's a waterfall and stream, without no pond. Why would you want a waterfall without a pond? The truth is that a pond less waterfall isn't for everyone, but it can be a great alternative for someone who isn't quite sure about installing a full-fledged pond. Standing water can also be scary for people with young children. We all know how fast children move, and the thought of having a pond so close to their play areas discourages some from considering a water garden. Other people feel that taking care of fish would be too much of a responsibility and that they won't be able to take proper care of it, or mosquitoes might become an issue. Others say they don't have the room for a whole pond. The pond less waterfall is for all the people that have these concerns, but are still in love with waterfalls. A pond less waterfall also requires much less space than a full pond which means one can be installed in practically any size yard. And because of our innovative installation system, we can install your new waterfall in about a day.Just think, you could be enjoying your new water feature tonight! ( applies to the base $3200.00 model )We also offer under waterfall lighting as well as outdoor lighting. If needed we can contract out to a licensed electrician to put a electrical box near your feature so there will be no need for extension cords.
